What it should and should not do

Good uses: policy questions, how to apply for leave, claim limits, public holiday arrangements, where to find forms. It should not handle grievances, disciplinary matters, health disclosures or anything personal beyond pointing staff to the right person confidentially.

Making it accurate

Keep the handbook current and make it the only source the assistant uses. Make sure it states when it does not know. Restrict it to general information unless staff are properly authenticated, and never let it reveal another employee's details.
