Short answer

For routine bookkeeping, AI with an accountant reviewing the output can replace or delay an in-house hire. You still need professional judgement for tax treatment, year-end, audits and advice. The usual answer is not AI or an accountant, but AI doing the volume work so the accountant's time goes on checking and advising.

When AI plus review makes sense

Your transactions are fairly standard, volumes are growing, and you are about to hire a bookkeeper or accounts clerk mainly for data entry, invoicing and chasing. AI covers that work, and an accountant reviews monthly.

When a hire still makes sense

You need someone on site daily for finance decisions, manage complex group structures or inventory, or need a finance lead who works closely with management. Even then, AI tools make that person far more productive.
